Painting a metal gate - how does it work?

A clean, freshly painted metal gate is the showpiece of your home. Proper maintenance can be very difficult when it comes to ferrous metal gates. If the paint peels off and rust begins, the metal parts will lose their appearance and may become damaged. Cleaning takes time, so it is good to do well the next painting and protection of the surface.

Watch out for the weather

Always remember - rain damages metal parts, especially if they are damaged, rusty or poorly painted. Choose a day to paint with no rain forecast for up to four days to ruin your hard work. Rain destroys the paint and the new paintwork, in addition, it is worth choosing a windless day.

cleaning and scrubbing

Scrub away dirt and rust with a wire brush. If necessary, dismantle the gate. By cleaning and scrubbing the surface of the metal gate, you can find out which areas are rusty and damaged. It is very important to thoroughly clean the surface and smooth out any imperfections. If you don't have a face mask and goggles, buy one asap. Nobody deserves dust or pain in their eyes. Or toxic fumes in the lungs. Wearing protective clothing, start scrubbing the rust and painting the gates with a wire brush. Put on gloves, then try to degrease the gates with degreasing liquids and wait for them to dry. If rust is persistent, scrape off loose rust again with a wire brush and mild dish soap or rust remover. After the procedure, dry the gates.

anti-rust

After the door is dry, use a dry and durable cloth to remove any dust or dirt. Use a wire brush to try and scrape off the extra rust and old paint, sanding down the rough spots in that order. It is a good idea to prime the gates as there are metals such as galvanized metal or zinc that have special properties and need to be primed. Therefore, check what the gate is made of and what colors you use. Remember to apply the primer thoroughly about 2-3 times with a spray gun or brush. Only then can you be sure that you have covered it perfectly and you can also apply a little to the rusty areas to fill in gaps and extra rust to prevent excessive corrosion. After you have finished spraying or brushing the first coat, allow it to dry before finishing off the second and third coats. You can always brush, roll or spray whatever you have on hand. Use combinations, it doesn't matter. All the better if you know which gap to fill and which area to cover. Getting crazy.

Start painting!

Let the primer dry and then start painting. Just start by painting the outside edges first, then the decorative ornaments on top and then the back of the gate. Always remember to have a cloth under the gate to avoid staining the pavement with paint. The most popular paint product is high gloss alkyd paint to give you that extra shine you need. This painting may take extra time, but the job will be done well. If you value quick operation and protection of the gate, you can use special paints, e.g. B. Hammerite, which can be applied directly to the rust. Hammerite paints feature DUALTECH technology which creates double protection of the metal by repelling water and preventing the formation of rust.
