How do you paint a room in a day?

Does your room, or any other room, feel a little...dull? Changing the wall color is one of the quickest ways to refresh a tired, worn space that we've grown accustomed to and may not be as impressive as it used to be. And since it's a design that most homeowners can handle, it's also one of the cheapest.

Every job has certain rules to ensure it gets done quickly and well. Therefore, it is worth paying attention to some tricks of professional painters. Take the preliminary work, for example. If you skip this important step, you could end up with a real hand problem - translucent primer or peeling paint. Fixing these types of errors not only takes time, but it can also cost you a significant amount of money if you have to hire a professional to fix your errors.

As long as you use the right supplies and keep the basics in mind, you'll paint like a pro. Now, learn everything there is to know about painting a room, from supplies to prep, rolling and even brush cleaning so you can move on to the next project on your list. Follow these tips for professional-looking results:

Create a renovation plan

Think of it a bit like cooking: you want to make a great dish, but wanting it is not enough, you also need ingredients and a recipe, an order on which a lot can depend. It's the same with painting. Does the ceiling need to be refreshed too? Or maybe it's worth changing something, for example removing the holes left by the hangers, tearing off the wallpaper on one of the walls. Choose the perfect color

When it comes to shades, the possibilities are endless. Eventually you'll find exactly what you're looking for because landing on the right shade can be quite a tedious process. To carry out your search, start by thinking about what you ultimately want. Do you have a warm or cool hue in mind? Does your space deserve a bold color or would a neutral color be more appropriate? Once you have a rough idea of the direction you want to go, you can start sifting through the splashes of paint.

The color on the wall may look completely different than the sample card, so consider purchasing color samples. If you don't want to wait for your order from the internet, you can inquire about it at your local paint store. Colors on the wall often appear lighter, and the light in a room can have a dramatic effect on color reading.

Calculate how much paint you need

Always check the packaging carefully for performance information. It's worth stocking at least 10 % or just buying a larger pack to use for corrections or for the next 1-2 years you can repair any damage to the coating.

Gather the right materials

Although the area and size of the room to be painted directly affects the exact list of consumables needed, it's worth including the most important things in the list, such as:

  • Painter's tape
  • wipes
  • Paint brush (both square and straight)
  • paint roller
  • color tray
  • stirring stick
  • color

Other worthwhile investments: an extension pole that allows you to hide the ladder on the edge step; paint can opener; and a spout to reduce clutter. If you plan to paint for several days, also prepare stretch wrap or breakfast wrap. This way you can protect the bowl, rollers and brushes that do not need to be cleaned overnight or dry out.

Prepare a room for painting

  • First vacuum the walls from floor to ceiling, for example with a dry brush. You might not believe it, but the walls are gathering dust. Even if you can't see it when priming or painting, you can tell the wall is dirty. Scrub heavily soiled parts with a damp sponge or cloth; The paint will not stick to the dirty surface
  • Protect the floor and any furniture that you cannot move. Choose cloth instead of plastic sheeting for the floor, as plastic can be slippery under your feet, or worse, a ladder.
  • Remove the outlet and light switch panels and mask off any areas you do not want to paint with masking tape.

Prime the wall

Painting a dark wall a light color (or stain) requires a primer and two coats of paint—and a minimum drying time of six hours. A primer may also be required for some paints, where the manufacturer recommends the use of special primers. For example, if you paint with Beckers Designer White, it is worth using Beckers Designer Primer.

Stir the paint

Good mixing ensures the color is well blended and no ingredients are layering. This is particularly important if the can has been on the shelf for a long time. Sometimes it makes sense to strain the color. It's easier to get the dirt out of a paint can than to wear it on the wall and fix it later. It is worth remembering this step if the paint has been used before. This is unlikely to be the case with new paints, but practice is also followed.

Walk!

You are ready to paint. If you paint a room with two colors - for example stripes - start with a lighter color because it is easier to cover it with darker color, for example in the case of imperfections. Once dry, run painter's tape over the spacer and then paint in a darker color.

According to professionals, when painting a room one color, here's what you do with a roller and brush:

  • Use an angled brush or sponge  to "cut" or paint a two-inch strip around the edge of the wood and top. (Remember: these areas should be taped back as explained in step 5).
  • Grab the paint tray and roller. Use the correct paint roller that you use. When using latex paint, first wet the roller.
  • Fill the well of the color cuvette about 1/4 full. Then, while applying paint, rotate the roller back and forth in the indentation until it is evenly covered. Finally, slide the shaft back and forth to remove excess material.
  • Fill in the middle unpainted space with a roller. Paint the wall with overlapping W or M strokes to spread the paint as evenly as possible.
  • Let the first coat dry for at least a couple of hours and then apply the next one. Between layers, cover the dish and brush with plastic wrap  by touching the color surface .

Get ready and clean up

  • Rinse the brush and roller  (if you don't throw them) under running water until the water runs clear.
  • Pour any leftover paint from the bowl back into the can; Seal the can tightly by covering the lid with a paper towel and tapping the edges of the lid with a mallet. Rinse the tray.
  • When the bristles are completely dry  , put the brush back in its original paper sleeve to keep the bristles from splattering, or try the following: Fold a thick piece of paper around the bristles; Adhesive tape for fixing.
  • Remove the masking tape before naming at night,  by pulling it at a 45 degree angle to avoid tearing the fairing.
